Shaping the future of packaging since 1924

Fords became renowned for developing the first machine to produce foil closures for returnable glass milk bottles in the 1920s. Now they work with the largest global brands to design, develop, and engineer everything from the bottles, cartons, and jars to the machines that seal the products.

The challenge was to develop a new brand that builds upon Fords’ reputation and heritage, and affirms them as a leading innovator and key influencer in sustainability, product innovation, packaging, and engineering solutions.

After collaborating closely with the full team at Fords, learning their design methods and aspirations to widen the brand offering, it was evident that the new brand needed to show them as the go-to consultancy and supplier of product design, production evolution, and marketing services.
Millions of people interact with Fords’ products on a daily basis. It was the peeling away of foil, that point of interaction, which provided the inspiration for the new brand.

Inspiration came from the interaction with each product closure and this helped to develop a graphic representation of the seal being removed. This was used to craft a bespoke headline font and formed the basis of the new identity system.

The identity reflects the company’s specialism in product design as well as technical ability and carries the brand’s dna though to every touch point. It is robust and utilitarian yet delicate and approachable.
